Childhood, Motherhood, Futurehood

Is it possible to give a future gift, something that's given now to one person that will eventually be given to someone else, way far down the road of life.

Sort of the idea of paying it forward, except this is giving it forward.

My baby girl granddaughter's first birthday is coming up. I sent some age-appropriate gifts for her for now.

But I made this necklace. For someday.

Her initial are "E" and "A". Of course, she's too young for this necklace now. But her mother's birthday is just a few days before hers, so I'm giving the necklace to my daughter for now. They're both redheads, so the colors will be flattering to both of them.

To wear in remembrance of her new daughter.

And someday, maybe a long, long time from now. Maybe I won't even be there. But someday, maybe my daughter will give it to her daughter for me, when she's old enough. And the time is right.

And there will be the "E" and "A" of her name, made for her when she was too young to remember it. Or maybe she'll remember seeing her mom wear it sometimes. And she can remember me by that, too.

Lynn, I'm a bit sentimental for initials. I've a locket with an A that was given to my grandmother by her mother when she was a young girl. She gave it to me when I was 16. It's one of my favourite things simply because of it's history. I'm sure this will be a treasured gift now for your daughter and even more so when your grand daughter is older. Again, you've come up with such a thoughtful gift!

That is incredible. I love it. And your granddaughter will cherish the memory that you made it and loved her so much.
I am an "E" too and have a soft spot for initials. You should do more of those! *wink*
Enjoy the day!

How lovely a thought. And the necklace you made is beautiful.

I have a locket that was given to my Grandmother Carolyn by my Grandfather Joseph very many years ago.It contains their pictures still. I wore it on my wedding day. My husband and I are also Carolyn and Joseph, a match made in heaven perhaps?

I LOVE-LOVE-LOVE that you all are sharing these stories, it's just more than I hoped for and it makes my week just perfect!

And yes, Erin, you are an "E" initial too - hmmmm, I'll have to give that some thought!

Carolyn, that's the most amazing thing, your two names matching, such a sweet memory. Thanks so much for sharing it.

Oh Lynn these wonderful pieces become incredible talismens, and time capsles that carry a family's story of love from one generation to the next! When my mother graduated from high school she was given a ring from her father. When I graduated from high school she passed it on to me for safe keeping. When my daughter graduated from high school I passed the ring to her for safe keeping until she can continue the tradition. :)

I thought you might like to know. I was showing a friend your wonderful creations of pewter. She has spent all of her adult life in South East Asia and the Middle East, and she is a practicing Buddhist. She was very impressed with your "buddha". She says your figure is actually Guanyin or Guan Yin the Goddess of Mercy :)Hmmm somehow knowing that makes the piece even more interesting.

Pattie, thanks for sharing that extra story about the Guan Yin figure. Years ago I used to make handmade soap, and I exchanged packages with a lady in Shanghai. She sent me the original medallion that was cast from, and also a seated buddha figure that I cherish. It's good to know more about the background. I'm familiar with Guan Yin but didn't know the medallion might be her image.
