Palm Sunday

     Today is Palm Sunday. No fooling - on April 1st, April Fool's Day, it's Palm Sunday. Kind of an odd combination, I think. Yesterday, on the last Saturday in March, my daughter and I went to the local Zoo with both of the kids. It was a lovely day, and we had a great time. The little man was in the stroller, and the granddaughter ran the trails and rode the train.
     In the afternoon, I worked in my square foot garden beds, to get things ready for planting. I didn't make it over to the studio yet this weekend, but I'll be going later today to ship some orders. Thank you to those who took advantage of the Giveaway post coupon.

Today's Special Discount and A Chance To See Me in Silly Glasses

Happy Labor Day! I'm Having a Sale in the Etsy Shop ...
For a lot of folks, it's the last sign of the end of the seemingly endless summer. And a chance to shop and save some money on the holiday. Yay!

Those photos are from my workbench at the studio. That's a pile of unfinished cast pewter pieces, with the scrubber and cleaning setup that I use on the left.


And that's my new flex shaft tool for the dremel, and a small buffing wheel accessory I bought at Harbor Freight on sale, in the photo on the right. The flex shaft is better than my old one, quieter and faster. So I'm glad I replaced the old one.

The sweeping brush is because everything I do on that side of the workbench is very dusty and messy. I have to sweep the desk, the floor and myself very often while I'm working. And I still seem to get covered with messy dust anyway.

That's me behind the close up prescription glasses, safety glasses, and respirator dust mask.

Sometime maybe I'll show a photo of one of my old dust masks covered in dust and you'll see why I wear the uncomfortable and annoying things. It's truly better for me to have both eyes and both lungs working than to worry about how crazy I look!

Showcase Day

I'm never sure if it does any good to list the Etsy shop in a Main Showcase, but to celebrate reaching my milestone of 800 sales (YAY!) I have a Saturday Showcase in the Main group on Etsy today.

There are still a lot of great things at special prices. I spent part of yesterday daydreaming about the new things I want to make and list in the ExpeditionD shop. If only I didn't need any sleep, I could get so much more done.

Well at least the days are staying light longer, that does help!

The daffodils in the front yard are blooming, that's a good sign.

Oh, and my analytics emailed me today - the blog has had 45,000 hits since this time last year. Love the fact that you are out there with me! I'm not alone in this adventure in front of the computer screen, you're right there on the other side looking back.

Easing UP on Eight Hundred

I set some personal goals, just to give me something to aim at. A milestone, so I know where I've been and where I'm headed. Do you ever watch the odometer in your car as it approaches one of those numbers with just zeros after it, and keep an eye on it so you can see it pass that number while you watch? The goals are kind of like that, I guess.

One was to have the lynndavis.etsy.com shop have as many sales as the expeditionD.etsy.com shop.

The pewter pieces have brought a lot more traffic and interest to the shop and I'm really excited about that.

I passed that one earlier in the month, but it was arbitrary and didn't mean much to anyone but me, it was just in my head. A personal checkbox I could put an "X" into. Watching the odometer roll to the 99999 position, a prelude to the next step.

I know, I really do need to fill up the expeditionD shop, and I have some ideas for new things I want to put in it, that's a surprise that's coming up. Some totally different things, just for variety! Coming ... soon I hope.

Peace, Sanctuary

I'm reading a series of mystery books by the gent who wrote the Father Dowling series, I may read those also, these are set on the campus of Notre Dame University. There's a lot of history, some great vocabulary expanding words, and good characters showing lots of human nature.

Maybe that's influencing me, reading these books, or maybe it's the time of year with Easter coming right up.

But lately, here are the icons that are popping out of my head and into my fingertips, things that look very ancient and spiritual.


One with the word "PEACE" and a very old fashioned spiritual iconic image in the resin, set in the pewter frame.

And another in an ornate, winged frame with the word "SANCTUARY" in it.


They're translucent, the light shines through when you hold them up to a lamp or window.

It reminds me of the old fashioned stained glass you see, with the hand painted images on the glass.

Spoon Tops and Roses

I've been playing with a design for a charm and headpin that looks like the top of vintage spoons, with the scrolls and ornate look of old english silver, and then made a pair of earrings using them.


I've started finishing the backs of the pewter pieces with a brushed metal look, it's very traditional.

These are pewter with a bright finish. I also made some with more of a bronze-coppery look.


The earrings used a pair of resin charms with rose designs in them. I thought they looked very sweet and colorful that way.


And this headpin with a spoon top on it, for adding a beautiful lampwork or ceramic bead, or some lovely pearls or faceted glass beads.

Can you tell I'm having fun with the pewter right now?

Hopefully soon I'll have enough sales to pull off another purchase of the metal to make more pewter.

All Buttoned Up and Braided Round

I've been playing with some new ideas in the pewter.

I thought it might be fun to make some pewter buttons, with a very vintage worn look, and a dark copper-bronze patina.

These are headed off to a special friend, hopefully to inspire some jewelry designs. I hope they strike the right note!



I also made this large braided rope circular emblem. I can see it being used as a clasp, or maybe with wire wrap attaching some fun dangles and vintage items.

It's large but still lightweight.

The more I work with the metal, the more I learn about how to get the designs I want out of it.

Now I need to place an order for more metal, to make more pewter. I'm thinking of having a sale in the shops, to help gather the funds for the order. Metal is heavy, and a bit more costly than polymer clay! And expensive to ship...


I think these would make cute earrings, or maybe a clasp for a bracelet. I thought the buttons would be fun, but I know you can just go to the sewing store and buy buttons right off a rack, huge numbers of them.

So I don't know if there's any interest in these hand cast buttons.

Any thoughts? Would you make use of hand cast pewter buttons, if they were in the shop?

Anchored in the Past

The pewter intrigues me. Learning to cast it and make shapes for use in the designs is something I've wanted for a long time.

I'm still learning how to do things with it. What works, and what doesn't.

Different finishes that work with it, how to make things look aged and worn. That faux vintage, faux-tique look I enjoy.


Bright finishes, darkened finishes.

These two charms were cast in the same mold, they look similar.

One has a shiny, polished pewter finish.

The other has a darkened, pitted worn look.


I don't always know when I cast them which one will work best. And I do like both. The piece signals which one it should have.
